Geography
The Republic of Uganda is located in the western portion of East Africa (longitudes of 29'-35'
East; latitudes 4' North-l' South).
Tororo Archdiocese is one of nineteen Catholic dioceses in Uganda. It borders the northern shores of Lake Victoria, sharing the border with Kenya to the East.
The Archdiocese of Tororo which covers an area of 3500 square mile, comprises of 13 Administrative Districts. These districts include: Busia and Tororo to the south of the diocese, Budaka and Kibuku to the Mid West; Bududa to the Mid East; Bulambuli, Sironko, Kween, Kapchorwa and Bukwa to the North East; Manafwa to the Mid South; Mbale to the Central; and Pallisa to the North West. The main ethnic tribes which live in these areas of the Archdiocese are: the Bagisu, Bagwe, Bagwere, Bakenye, Banyole, Basamia, Iteso, Jopadhola, and Sabiny (Sebei). Of the several languages spoken, the following have been approved for liturgical use: Ateso, Dhopadhola, English, Kiswahili, Kupsabiny, Luganda, Lumasaba, and Lusamia-Lugwe.
The terrain within the Archdiocese varies greatly. Kapchorwa, Kween, Bukwo, Sironko, Bulambuli, Bududa and Mbale sections share an area including the second highest mountain in East Africa (with altitudes between 1,500 and 4,700 meters). Busia, Kibuku, Budaka Pallisa and Tororo, on the other hand, are relatively flat, with gentle hills and rockier terrain.
